Today I want to introduce you to one the wonderful people I've gotten to work with at <a href="http://cooperativepress.com/" target="_blank">Cooperative Press</a>. </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
<a href="https://darkmatterknits.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/p1000725_edited-1.jpg?w=193&h=185" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://darkmatterknits.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/p1000725_edited-1.jpg?w=193&h=185" /></a> </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
Elizabeth Green Musselman is one of the most talented, sweet, generous, and all around kick-ass women I've had the pleasure of meeting. She is a pattern designer, a graphic designer, and an editor, and in her previous life she was a history teacher at a small liberal arts college. She blogs and podcasts at <a href="https://darkmatterknits.wordpress.com/" target="_blank">Dark Matter Knits</a>.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I first met her after I had turned the materials for Hat Couture. What I handed in was text and photos. What she created is a gorgeous book! I actually cried with joy when I got my first look at the layout. The fonts, the borders, the layout on the page - it was all her. </div>
<div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqkJ774risj9DS_FvFzGtbQJUWNnpXVTsDUdtnkOzETqZ_VAwvfVGnw937L8X489C5lHb5j2eZCrKwvuZLejkk8X9TQA_hXuoVOfCk_nvD2F6b_hKn3f58dT7fbnXHXaf_PxH7qFwaiqdr/s1600/book+page.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqkJ774risj9DS_FvFzGtbQJUWNnpXVTsDUdtnkOzETqZ_VAwvfVGnw937L8X489C5lHb5j2eZCrKwvuZLejkk8X9TQA_hXuoVOfCk_nvD2F6b_hKn3f58dT7fbnXHXaf_PxH7qFwaiqdr/s1600/book+page.jpg" height="640" width="520" /></a> </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In her own words, "The most fun aspect of designing knitting books to me is
thinking about how to translate the designer's vision for their
knitwear into graphic design language." </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
And now she's written her own book <a href="http://cooperativepress.com/collections/books/products/kung-fu-knits" target="_blank">Kung Fu Knits</a>. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div>
<br /><span style="color: #0000ee;">This clever book is part comic book and part pattern book<span style="color: #0000ee;">, and all fantastic! It's also a love letter to her son who is <span style="color: #0000ee;">the inspiration and the star of the book. </span></span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #0000ee;"><span style="color: #0000ee;"><span style="color: #0000ee;"> </span></span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #0000ee;"><span style="color: #0000ee;"><span style="color: #0000ee;">In Kung Fu <span style="color: #0000ee;">Knits she has taken up the chal<span style="color: #0000ee;">lenge o<span style="color: #0000ee;">f <span style="color: #0000ee;">creating knits that boys will actually want to wear. As she points out in the introduction, boys <span style="color: #0000ee;">tend to run hot, <span style="color: #0000ee;">like to be comfortable, and can be very picky about style. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #0000ee;"><span style="color: #0000ee;"><span style="color: #0000ee;"><span style="color: #0000ee;"><span style="color: #0000ee;"><span style="color: #0000ee;"><span style="color: #0000ee;"><span style="color: #0000ee;"><span style="color: #0000ee;"> </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></div>

I'm seriously conside<span style="color: #0000ee;">ring knitting this Gi Jacke<span style="color: #0000ee;">t for Sam who also practises Kung Fu. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></div>

branching out on her own. She recently started a business with Anne
Podlesak of Wooly Wonka Fibers (and frequent contributor to Cooperative
Press books) called <a href="http://stitchdefinition.org/">Stitch Definition</a>. They offer photography, graphic design, and editing services to
independent designers, dyers, and others in the fiber industry. They officially launching in May at TNNA, but
have already started taking clients on a case-by-case basis.</div>

Thank-you Elizabeth and I wish you only the best of luck in your new venture!</div>

<br />
To quote Alex from the intr<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">oductio</span>n:<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">The year is 3015. The polar ice caps have melted and the deserts
expanded, leaving the Earth a seared, crusty Hell. Meanwhile, nuclear
fallout has blocked out the sun, plunging the world into a new ice age

tomorrow.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;"><span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">This is a really fun group book with a wild assortment truly creative, imaginative, and downright wacky patterns.</span></span><br />

Lunar Progression is my contribution to this book. It's a scarf with a built in lunar calender (because everyone needs one of those, right?) <a href="http://whimsyonawhim.blogspot.com/2013/11/so-apocolypse-happened-that-no-excuse.html" target="_blank">Look here</a> for my earlier blog post all about this pattern. <br />

And check out <a href="http://www.dull-roar.com/2013/10/31-days-hath-doomvember.html" target="_blank">Dull Roar</a> (Alex's blog) with links to a whole bunch of behind the scenes posts from other designers. <br />
<br />
One of the things I really like about knitting is its broad appeal. Classy, elegant, sophisticated? Yup, plenty of that! Sweet, adorable, cherubic? Absolutely! Silly, crazy, over the top? Oh yeah, we've got that too! Whatever your mood or need you'll be able to knit something to suit. So in the immortal words of William Shakespeare, "Get thee to a yarn shop" (or something like that.)<br />
<br />
Also get thee to the <a href="https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1maGuwWmehXMi0kHSdWIqBPN-DJnvBiE3c566lG1QKdA/viewform" target="_blank">Cooperative Press</a> website and sign up for prizes!ArgentGalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12711841590847130831noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1709117940094017876.post-37271492083201732992015-02-04T11:12:00.002-08:002015-02-04T11:12:35.106-08:00The Hats of Cooperative Press (part 2)<div style="text-align: center;">

As promised the tour of hats continues! There really are a dizzying array of great hat patterns available from <a href="http://cooperativepress.com/" target="_blank">Cooperative Press</a>. <b></b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

Cooperative Press, run by the incomparable Shannon Okey has been wonderful to work with. In keeping with the "cooperative" part of their name, I'm participating in the Valentine's Promo. Over the course of the next two weeks I'll be blogging and tweeting about an assortment of wonderful books from Cooperative Press. Be sure to look for the tag #shareCPlove here and on twitter and other social media to read more from me and other authors.<br />

<br />
The fine print:<br />
* For all prizes won, you must be on the CP mailing list at the time winners are selected. <br />
*
Any type of link will count for submission, on any form of social
media, so long as it is publicly accessible. For example, if you write a
review on Goodreads, link directly to it (like so: <a href="https://www.google.com/url?q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.goodreads.com%2Freview%2Fshow%2F229689800%3Fbook_show_action%3Dtrue&sa=D&sntz=1&usg=AFQjCNGmUHNHRRewtkrzkp4b7s9i07lZtA">https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/229689800?book_show_action=true</a>). But if you write on a Twitter account that is not public, the link won't count. <br />
<br />
Some
possible ideas: Amazon reviews, Goodreads reviews, Pinterest pins of
patterns from CP books, Facebook posts, Tumblr posts, Instagram posts or
regrams.<br />
* All entries must be submitted before February 14th. <br />
Good luck and thanks for all the love! ♥<br />

Here is fashion at its peak. Every object has been meticulously designed and executed to create a spectacle. These are not simply clothes, they are events. They create entire stories of their own.<br />

Oh and THESE SHOES! These are Mae West's 8.5" platform shoes! The top part is leather and the base is wood covered in silver paint. Just the silver toes and heels would have shown at the hem of her gowns. Apparently she wore them all the time, on screen and off.<br />
<br />
Later in the day Dad and I found ourselves completely fascinated by the <a href="http://www.mfa.org/exhibitions/shinique-smith" target="_blank">Bright Matter</a> exhibit by Shinique Smith. In stark contrast to the lavish Hollywood costumes that were painstakingly made, one of a kind pieces, lovingly preserved and valued over the years, her work is made from throw away objects. The everyday items that we use and toss. <br />
<br />

No Key, No Question <br />

I particularly like how she uses what is substantially garbage to create objects of such lightness and beauty. <br />

The most fascinating pieces for me were her Bales. <br />

<br />
These totem-like pieces are made entirely of clothing and bits of fabric. I found the sheer mass of everyday STUFF bundled up in this way to be utterly fascinating. I felt that these pieces really spoke to who we are as a society and the value (or lack of value) that we give to the objects that we surround ourselves with. I'm not sure if she meant her work to be a cometary on fast fashion and waste in our society but it definitely go me thinking in that direction. <br />

I was particularly fascinated by the items I could identify, such as this Paul Frank patterned fleece sleeper that probably was sold at Target. <br />
<br />
I definitely walked away from this exhibit with a renewed determination to buy as much as possible second hand. Art is wonderful but waste is not. I had a wonderful trip to the East Coast but decided to make a real vacation of it and allowed myself to totally goof off. It was great! I spent lots of time indulging in long rambling conversations with friends and family, working on personal knitting projects, watching TV, and generally doing whatever I damn well pleased. That didn't include taking very many pictures so I don't have a whole lot to show off.<br />
<br />
One thing that did inspire me to pull out the camera was a trip to the Museum of Fine Art in Boston with my Dad.<br />

<div>
<br />
First, a friend arranged a spur of the moment meeting for me with the lovely owner of <a href="https://www.yarntasticpdx.com/" target="_blank">Yarntastic</a> in Sellwood. Check them out out. It's a wonderful store and owner Lesley is lovely.<br />
</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://nebula.wsimg.com/a1d92bc539b82e3bcd229cf764c81b7a?AccessKeyId=A4E41920E15F8F5678E4&disposition=0&alloworigin=1" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="385" src="https://nebula.wsimg.com/a1d92bc539b82e3bcd229cf764c81b7a?AccessKeyId=A4E41920E15F8F5678E4&disposition=0&alloworigin=1" width="640" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The upshot of the meeting was that I'll be doing a trunk show during the <a href="http://www.rosecityyarncrawl.com/" target="_blank">Rose City Yarn Crawl</a>
in March! This is an amazing opportunity for me and one that I'm truly
grateful for. If you're going to be in Portland for the yarn crawl be
sure to come by Yarntastic and say, "hi." <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://assets3.ravelry.com/assets/183558964/banner-72dpi-468x60.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://assets3.ravelry.com/assets/183558964/banner-72dpi-468x60.jpg" height="51" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Then in the evening while I was trying to figure out all the things I'll need to do to get ready for the yarn crawl, I found out that one of my patterns was mentioned in a piece in <a href="http://the-toast.net/2015/01/09/things-can-find-knitting-patterns/" target="_blank">The Toast</a>! (Scroll down to #19.) Personally, I think the knit broccoli is pretty awesome! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0294/8497/products/DD1_medium_1024x1024.jpg?v=1405701512" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0294/8497/products/DD1_medium_1024x1024.jpg?v=1405701512" height="265" width="400" /></a></div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I'll have <a href="http://cooperativepress.com/products/lunar-progression-doomsday-knits-theressa-silver" target="_blank">lunar progressio</a>n with me at the trunk show in March so, seriously, come by and see it in person. It's cool.</div>
<div>
<br />
And now, I really have to turn my attention to getting ready to go out of town. If I don't do laundry soon I'll end up being that cliche where the kids shows up at home with a suitcase full of dirty laundry. Maybe cute in your 20s but not so much in your 40s. </div>

Things got a bit crazy here. Steve has been having abdominal pain for the past 8 months. In November he was diagnosed with gallstones and gallbladder removal was suggested. The surgery was scheduled for the end of January but two attacks in three days around Christmas resulted in the decision to move it up. So on Saturday we drove home from California, Sunday and Monday we scurried around to get things organized, and yesterday he had surgery. I'm very happy to report that everything went smoothly and Steve is recovering nicely today. The procedure itself took barely an hour and we were in and out of the outpatient center in 4 hours total! Steve has three small incisions from the laparoscopic procedure which will need a little time to heal but his abdominal pain is completely gone. And I finally have a little free time to sit and write a blog post.<br />
<br />
Prior to the holidays, I had hit a bit of a dry spell on the thrift store front (a whole lot of frogs and no princes). Nothing was right. Things that fit were boring. Things with pretty fabric were cut all wrong for me. Or I loved the print but hated the fabric (polyester is not my friend.) Finally, just before leaving for California I found this great Eileen Fisher dress. It's cotton knit, has a flattering cut with a surplice bodice and the curved hemline, and is one of my favorite colors. It's still not a print but at least it's something I can pair with strong colors and shiny bakelite bangles. <br />

It's a gloriously sunny day here which always a nice treat in January in the Pacific Northwest.<br />

<br />
My favorite part of this outfit has got to be the mustard yellow tights and the new to me Fluevog boots. I bought them secondhand off the <a href="https://www.fluevog.com/community/fluemarket/" target="_blank">Fluemarket</a> from a woman in Vancouver (WA) who was willing to meet me halfway so I didn't have to pay for shipping. <br />

<br />
I won't be resting for long. Assuming all continues to go well with Steve's recovery, I'll be on a plane headed to Boston Monday night for a just me trip to see my family. Steve and Sam will be bachin' it here. More about that soon!<br />

I'm also going to take this time to give some though to where I want to go with this blog. One change I have decided on is to start using my husband's and son's real names. <div><br></div><div>We're having a lovely time. Sam (the Sprog) is on winter break and we've taken advantage of the time to do an assortment of projects in the kitchen. He's becoming quite adept at making caramel. Here's his latest creation which we've dubbed "All wheel drive caramel." (Because it's like rocky road.) It has mini marshmallows and pecans in it and a layer of chocolate one top. It's a bit sticky but very yummy! </div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhS8S3V-XO0APdjc6QRa6IX6cIr-Tp9YPYP2eDUN3RwXRhjVxpPqoZx4WnBh62uyc4oiopP95btpZ4i_4awStLdGXaeZwsZwRu4-b6tOhSbluAgWN6rTYJGLZx5S9T0BkxnCXnpvmwv_FlT/s640/blogger-image--64171360.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhS8S3V-XO0APdjc6QRa6IX6cIr-Tp9YPYP2eDUN3RwXRhjVxpPqoZx4WnBh62uyc4oiopP95btpZ4i_4awStLdGXaeZwsZwRu4-b6tOhSbluAgWN6rTYJGLZx5S9T0BkxnCXnpvmwv_FlT/s640/blogger-image--64171360.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>We're currently in California with Steve's (Hubby) family celebrating a late Christmas overlapped with New Years. The drive down yesterday was nicely uneventful and we're settling in nicely with his parents, brother, and sister-in-law. The third brother and his fiancé arrive later today. That will make nine of us in a house with two bathrooms. I'm thinking a sign-up sheet might be necessary! </div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZi0gtgY36rPDTseV23Y_86m8Qg5rCTzr2uLF9GpNc843jB9GsZ-iU_nIzdHaFnCc_5OFfpmbjtdIRHU4q2BNGBVNrjf32QDpyrPKWKDd7FWV0lNOgiWLWZzmUhR4eWlBN-IaK_aMdg9te/s640/blogger-image--1998732293.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZi0gtgY36rPDTseV23Y_86m8Qg5rCTzr2uLF9GpNc843jB9GsZ-iU_nIzdHaFnCc_5OFfpmbjtdIRHU4q2BNGBVNrjf32QDpyrPKWKDd7FWV0lNOgiWLWZzmUhR4eWlBN-IaK_aMdg9te/s640/blogger-image--1998732293.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Angus thought he was coming too. </div><br></div><div>I intend to enjoy the next few days lazing around, reading, knitting, socializing, and generally slacking off. night was the first night of Chanukah and thanks to a little last
minute scurrying, everything was ready. The Sprog lit the candles and
he and I said the prayers together in Hebrew. Lighting the menorah with
my son always takes me back to when I was a kid lighting the menorah
with my parents. <br />
<br />

The bag of tennis ball are for Giant Dog, she loves them (literally) to pieces. <br />

<div style="text-align: start;">
<span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><span style="text-align: center;">Chanukah celebrates the victory of the Maccabees (Jewish rebels) over the Greek king Antiochus </span></span><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; text-align: center;">who had conquered Jeruselem, outlawed Jewish observances, and sacked the temple. After freeing Jeruselem, the Temple</span><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; text-align: center;"> was purified and the wicks of the menorah (a ritual lamp kept lit at all times) miraculously burned for eight days, even though there was only enough sacred oil for one day's lighting. Because of this the Chanukah (which means "dedication") lasts 8 days, candles (or small oil lamps) are lit each day, and foods fried in oil are eaten (yum!)</span></div>

<div style="text-align: start;">
<span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; text-align: center;">From a religious perspective Chanukah is a minor holiday, celebrating a military victory. However, because of its proximity to Christmas it has gained prominence and is celebrated by many Jews as a major gift giving holiday.</span></div>

<span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; text-align: center;">Life has gotten busy (as it does this time of year) so I expect posts to be scarce for the next few weeks but I'll do my best to remember to take some pictures and check in now and then. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: start;">
<span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; text-align: center;"><br /></span></div>

My grandmother was a big Dr Who fan in the 70s and 80's. She was also a knitter. Logically, this means that both my brother and I ended up with Dr Who scarves! <br />
<br />

I didn't like Dr Who when I was a kid ( think the aliens freaked me out) but I'm really into it in it's latest round. <br />

I'm a little ashamed to admit that I didn't appreciate it at the time
but I do cherish this scarf now. The rest of the outfit is all stuff
you've seen before. I've been pretty much living in this cardigan since
I got it last week.<br />

It's been one of those weeks where nothing really special one way or another happens. The days have gone mostly as planned with no particular events to note. I mostly spent this week ticking off things from my around the house to-do list (I reorganized my sock drawer - crazy, I know!) and kitting a sweater for the Sprog. I did make it out to a couple of thrift stores too.</div>
<br />
Here's a happy coincidence. On Monday I found the long cardigan, on Tuesday I found the skirt, and on Wednesday I put them together with one of my absolutely favorite pairs of shoes!<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTJyobF1POkSIfTEX1N9OvO8-Oo2HTF0-Q-HAXveXFEdGHShS04wqOg66SlyKE726rU6LNhVsPlijahJGVVMoo08PQE07dk6ZNnrdiLFb9EeqGGIpIX7Ay-T5IWM7TKpCfffj2EEj3-IjD/s1600/momo+outfit.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTJyobF1POkSIfTEX1N9OvO8-Oo2HTF0-Q-HAXveXFEdGHShS04wqOg66SlyKE726rU6LNhVsPlijahJGVVMoo08PQE07dk6ZNnrdiLFb9EeqGGIpIX7Ay-T5IWM7TKpCfffj2EEj3-IjD/s1600/momo+outfit.JPG" height="640" width="304" /></a><br />
<br />
Cardigan (CB Designs) - thrifted<br />
Skirt (John Paul Richard) - thrifted<br />
Tights (Target) - New but by way of Goodwill.<br />
Camisole (Old Navy) - Thrifted<br />
The clothing cost a total of $24.<br />
And that's why I can afford the extravagantly priced Fluevog shoes I'm loving so much! <br />
<br />
I also found a few goodies for the <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/midcenturymania" target="_blank">etsy</a> shop. You can still get 20% off (any purchase over $10) with coupon code VINTAGEHOLIDAYS.<br />

Perfectly 70s dress.<br />
<br />
It's kinda nice to have this quiet time after the flurry of activity last week for
Thanksgiving. I'm hoping for a couple of more mellow weeks before
winter break and holiday craziness starts.<br />
<br />
But the week hasn't been dull either. Get this, it's National Cookie Day! Seriously, go look it up. To
celebrate I made pumpkin cookies with pumpkin form my garden. They're
delicious. <a href="http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Iced-Pumpkin-Cookies/Detail.aspx?evt19=1" target="_blank">Here's</a> the recipe. There's a glaze to go on top but I think they're perfect without.<br />

<br />
And lastly I leave you with this bit of cookie related whimsey from my childhood. Enjoy!<br />

Halston 100% wool full length coat with velvet lined hood and velvet buttons. I paid $25 for it and I'll confess that I do gloat a little every time I put it on. <br />

I think the black leather gloves (also a thrift store bargain) add an elegant touch. The hat was a gift from Hubby from Simply Vintage and I added the bakelite hatpin from ebay. The outfit underneath (which I braved the cold to show you - you're welcome) is based around last week's thrift store find. I think Giant Dog approves.<br />

<br />
My ongoing attempts to add more color and pattern into my wardrobe resulted in this long rayon dress. It's a serious departure from my usual palette but it blends nicely with the burgundy I'm so comfortable wearing so it works. It's a summer dress so I had to really layer it up for winter. The pale blue is definitely a new color for me and works with this week's <a href="http://spygirl-amb.blogspot.com/2014/11/52-pick-me-up-morning-glory.html" target="_blank">52 Pick-me-up: Morning Glory</a>! <br />

My squee of the week is this pair of bright yellow bakelite bangles I got for $2 each. (The mustard bakelite bangle is a $1 find from earlier in the fall.)<br />

Working on this for the last six months has been far more rewarding than I expected. I find that I look forward to sitting down a couple times a week to write out the little stories of my day to day life. It has a therapeutic quality in addition to being a creative endeavor. I'm sure I would have let it fall to the wayside if it hadn't been for those of you who take the time to come read my posts and leave such kind and encouraging comments. I am grateful for you. <div><br></div><div>Thank-you also to those of you who invite me into your lives each week through your thoughtful, funny, and inspirational blogs. I have found a community of wildly interesting people flung all around the world that has accepted me with open arms. The feeling of belonging to a group is more precious to me than you probably realize. Maybe someday I'll get up the courage to write a post about bullying and the lifelong scars it leaves but for now, just know that you have truly given me a gift by welcoming me into the community. </div><div><br></div><div>Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday because it is truly secular (making it completely inclusive) and because it's non-commercial. It's about celebrating bounty with the people who you love and who love you. It's about taking a day to focus on what you have, not wishing for things you don't have. I choose to ignore the retailers who insist on trying to turn it into another shopping opportunity. There's plenty of time for that starting tomorrow. Today sit, eat delicious food, visit with lovely people, and count your blessings.</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNxMjbTpsVNAC9SLfGFmpkGdwKSYC_PMowcXJ89PKi2l4oWQ_gTo3pLGGro8racj2eF4JYK2RU7UBmxyJZZL0OXgAuh0rSckmiahbNIF79VSuCrrmuSgYhBqrT9oBO1GhTAHZ3oL0cWI9H/s640/blogger-image--570715191.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNxMjbTpsVNAC9SLfGFmpkGdwKSYC_PMowcXJ89PKi2l4oWQ_gTo3pLGGro8racj2eF4JYK2RU7UBmxyJZZL0OXgAuh0rSckmiahbNIF79VSuCrrmuSgYhBqrT9oBO1GhTAHZ3oL0cWI9H/s640/blogger-image--570715191.jpg"></a></div></div><div><br></div><div>Today I am blessed with a husband who smoked turkey leg quarters!</div><div><br></div><div>Happy Thanksgiving!</div><div>-Theressa</div><div><br></div>ArgentGalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12711841590847130831noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1709117940094017876.post-13925073165673311792014-11-25T14:09:00.001-08:002014-11-25T20:16:12.388-08:00Bringing Black Out of the Closet<div style="text-align: left;">
This week Anne's <a href="http://spygirl-amb.blogspot.com/2014/11/52-pick-me-up-black.html" target="_blank">52 Pick-me-up</a> prompt is "black." I have a very odd relationship with black clothing. In high school and college I definitely had leanings in the goth
direction and wore plenty of black. Black has never been a
depressed or otherwise negative color for me. It's strong and defiant.
It's mysterious and secretive. And sometimes, it's just plain simple.</div>
<div>
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTRrY8gC2agD-ehL6d1JO6jCY8yzqzUye5YlRxjKmtJvExu47gvN1_uquDR1EXFdMQ7OHL4tEd7-PFBIWnNEvyDwIUegdEjUdkZ8DUFkur1TRGSxsiXdj0qaDvfa1OpyH6EuAEkWXWlJqV/s1600/use+2.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTRrY8gC2agD-ehL6d1JO6jCY8yzqzUye5YlRxjKmtJvExu47gvN1_uquDR1EXFdMQ7OHL4tEd7-PFBIWnNEvyDwIUegdEjUdkZ8DUFkur1TRGSxsiXdj0qaDvfa1OpyH6EuAEkWXWlJqV/s1600/use+2.JPG" height="640" width="272" /></a> <br />
<br />
A rummage through my closet resulted in this all black outfit. I think the layer and textures give it a lot of interest. <br />
<br />
At some point in my mid-twenties, I was clothes shopping with Hubby and
trying to decide which color of a garment to buy. I decided to get black because it goes with everything when Hubby pointed
out that of course it went with everything because everything else in my
closet was black too. Oops! I guess I had taken it a bit too far. <br />
<br /></div>
<div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgofVZQUjrHeBaaGj6dzgghkaGpj6NwXHw_GDTDReVlqNkF3nLkLu5vyhRlyaxiW3wwlve3SZab1FKiSa6vWcphiM7P9jryApjiDjwcOdX4OMZF_qyJME9hSKYgLwUkDjAe-pAWwqC4Rj8a/s1600/use+3.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgofVZQUjrHeBaaGj6dzgghkaGpj6NwXHw_GDTDReVlqNkF3nLkLu5vyhRlyaxiW3wwlve3SZab1FKiSa6vWcphiM7P9jryApjiDjwcOdX4OMZF_qyJME9hSKYgLwUkDjAe-pAWwqC4Rj8a/s1600/use+3.JPG" height="640" width="312" /></a><br />
<br />
I see all of the gorgeous colors and patterns that other bloggers are wearing and keep thinking that I should do that too, but try as I might I keep coming back to dark colors and black. This tug of war I have with myself over black vs bright colors has resulted in several angsty moments in the fitting room and at least one very odd hole in my wardrobe. It turns out that in my attempt to not buy black clothing I never replaced my basic black skirt when it gave up the ghost a while back. I keep pulling out shirts that would look great with a black skirt and then realizing that I don't own one and thus not wearing the shirt. Or, I should say, DIDN'T own one. Yesterday I filled the gap with the great basic linen/rayon blend skirt I'm wearing today. It's just the right length to be long an flowing but also let my shoes show. I expect to be wearing it a lot. </div>
<div>
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJqLDfVtKT_E0w5WyD6bf16koa3R_gfREBoPPG9Zidv8wQD25Ux0lieRbkXWu943ocWHJJNto_PcaLskPuLPUOYNJdBwCOKMN1ZIUNiDN5Eij0jFTMX8EOMOhA_yhcGaIXT6wygTYQ0Ezm/s1600/use+1.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJqLDfVtKT_E0w5WyD6bf16koa3R_gfREBoPPG9Zidv8wQD25Ux0lieRbkXWu943ocWHJJNto_PcaLskPuLPUOYNJdBwCOKMN1ZIUNiDN5Eij0jFTMX8EOMOhA_yhcGaIXT6wygTYQ0Ezm/s1600/use+1.JPG" height="320" width="280" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
All black and all thrifted from head to toe except the polka dot socks. I threw them in just for fun! Don't you just love a good granny boot?<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBr6mH72wnq6Jc1rMbeH4syDONg26HS9ZtfGV_xY5iK8UKgOFaoTob3viQUSxqgnpZQEL-XeJ5ccFfEbIB3ZxL1QBDloQHSe6HVzUspqIFUE6mFWVQU-hXDPxJ4w2NIe237BW-wYKZAWEv/s1600/jewelry.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBr6mH72wnq6Jc1rMbeH4syDONg26HS9ZtfGV_xY5iK8UKgOFaoTob3viQUSxqgnpZQEL-XeJ5ccFfEbIB3ZxL1QBDloQHSe6HVzUspqIFUE6mFWVQU-hXDPxJ4w2NIe237BW-wYKZAWEv/s1600/jewelry.JPG" height="248" width="320" /></a> <br />
<br />
Vintage rhinestone jewelry. The earrings are another pair of converted screwbacks. <br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3UETfBUGvTuTz-jmPQML7KBGTwXnCIvpSbxVkpv4X7uw_XO_g7_irK2NVsVtXcw3Zi4N19YipIZK1d4W2Fs36DZrGE8f2MEMcEicMc9u9K8CUHybiBC5vlw-_FiQK8xGHFOb7Bjcfqbkz/s1600/use+4.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3UETfBUGvTuTz-jmPQML7KBGTwXnCIvpSbxVkpv4X7uw_XO_g7_irK2NVsVtXcw3Zi4N19YipIZK1d4W2Fs36DZrGE8f2MEMcEicMc9u9K8CUHybiBC5vlw-_FiQK8xGHFOb7Bjcfqbkz/s1600/use+4.JPG" height="400" width="292" /></a><br />
<br />
So, yes, I'm trying to add more color to my closet but apparently not doing a very good job of it. To be fair I do generally wear them with assorted shades of red (but my obsession with all things red is a topic for another post) such as <a href="http://whimsyonawhim.blogspot.com/2014/11/ogres-are-like-onions.html" target="_blank">here</a> and <a href="http://whimsyonawhim.blogspot.com/2014/10/this-week-has-been-all-about-knee.html" target="_blank">here</a>. <br />

<br />
My Maine Coon is supervising. He's a giant fluffy marshmallow of a cat and I love him to pieces.<br />
<br />
I realize looking back through my outfit pictures on this blog that you wouldn't realize how much black I wear from just looking at the outfits I've shown. Of course that's because I don't bother taking pictures of yet-another-black-outfit, but trust me it's a staple. Maybe after this post I won't be so shy about posting pictures of outfits centered around black. After all this is a blog about my style. (Note to self, stop worrying so much about what other people will think.)<br />
<br />
I did decide the all black outfit was a bit much (but I could see wearing that out somewhere) and changed into softer knits for a day of errands and chores. And on the whole I think I prefer the cheerfulness of the fuchsia. </div>

This pattern
includes directions for both an amigurumi toy and a drawstring
gelt (loot) bag using the same charts and techniques. The
size of the gelt bag can be adjusted by removing or inserting
extra repeats of the checkerboard pattern between each letter
chart. The colorwork on this is simple enough to make it a
good choice for someone who wants to try colorwork for the
first time.

<br />
When Knit Picks put out the call for pattern submission for the holiday collection I knew I wanted to create something just for Chanukah and came up with this stuffed dreidel toy and matching gelt bag.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixNU339WBG-JCVG0x5ww7YaNOPEAIQgRDR7zJt2hEowT2XsZd2CASoDvLyBwOVUTSNtBnpAdPUXbeD7CwrLxXxsMD8jTR2VWPVh7QruKCfFMuN5KQAWr-fFLDMFpnIcG3vh16BS21tvley/s1600/55680220_3.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixNU339WBG-JCVG0x5ww7YaNOPEAIQgRDR7zJt2hEowT2XsZd2CASoDvLyBwOVUTSNtBnpAdPUXbeD7CwrLxXxsMD8jTR2VWPVh7QruKCfFMuN5KQAWr-fFLDMFpnIcG3vh16BS21tvley/s1600/55680220_3.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a> <br />
<br />
It was a lot of fun working out the charts for each of the four letters. <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjU9M4JfUftadPvffMnm3K2cMvCUVx7kGIHIzLkUo7UI_h7XQ3q61adcmYNks9w47RtECVOlfh0h_Y6S-CUIHBBiFPHVoE2bSNEcAMo8crNse22tMUjAryLqORBfXiYL4WWsGuQBQDUwkWp/s1600/55680220_4.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjU9M4JfUftadPvffMnm3K2cMvCUVx7kGIHIzLkUo7UI_h7XQ3q61adcmYNks9w47RtECVOlfh0h_Y6S-CUIHBBiFPHVoE2bSNEcAMo8crNse22tMUjAryLqORBfXiYL4WWsGuQBQDUwkWp/s1600/55680220_4.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a><br />
<br />
The letters are נ (Nun), ג (Gimmel), ה (Hay) and ש (Shin). They are the first letters of each of the words in the Hebrew phrase, "nes gadol haya sham" which means "a great miracle happened there." This refers to the defeat of the <span itemprop="description">Syrian armies of Antiochus by Judah </span><span itemprop="description">Maccabee and his followers. When the Maccabees reclaimed the Temple they only had enough oil to keep the eternal flame lit for one day, but instead the flame stayed lit for eight days which was enough time for more oil to be brought. </span><br />
<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwnbj5B220bsepoKVrtznwsJiwAeX63m3ltPcd2gSzZDxF811bnVmcLGZWU4gAHyGQGDB8SDY1daY_F0DiN4nyxBY4M8TwuwsZrJ63BiS0YY6iGgYgW5FndDcoW8gGYx1zlK6nHwZVOwYp/s1600/55680220_5.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwnbj5B220bsepoKVrtznwsJiwAeX63m3ltPcd2gSzZDxF811bnVmcLGZWU4gAHyGQGDB8SDY1daY_F0DiN4nyxBY4M8TwuwsZrJ63BiS0YY6iGgYgW5FndDcoW8gGYx1zlK6nHwZVOwYp/s1600/55680220_5.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a><br />
<br />After the State of Israel was founded in 1948 the Hebrew letters
were changed for dreidels used in Israel. They became: נ (Nun), ג
(Gimmel), ה (Hay) and פ (Pey), changing "sham" (there) to "po" (here.)<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqTiMEwsPKJhJ7jlyNXpSzoM7XSq1fecbtVU_R-7H1NXdNDGB-SZAkgYGqBeOVZVe5Mlnfcq-nrpbr8sUiM8we36dN_S9KBMKHoCjnJzcNbcOQeQJf8q_oEHZRfKfVBFiluyarZK5S7L4T/s1600/55680220_6.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqTiMEwsPKJhJ7jlyNXpSzoM7XSq1fecbtVU_R-7H1NXdNDGB-SZAkgYGqBeOVZVe5Mlnfcq-nrpbr8sUiM8we36dN_S9KBMKHoCjnJzcNbcOQeQJf8q_oEHZRfKfVBFiluyarZK5S7L4T/s1600/55680220_6.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a><br />
<br />
Gelt is a Yiddish word meaning money. Traditionally money is given as gift at Chanukah but because of it's proximity to Christmas, many Jews have taken to giving other presents too.<br />

Well, I'm on day three. Saturday The Sprog was away all day doing Rangers stuff with <a href="http://trackerspdx.com/" target="_blank">Trackers</a> so Hubby and I decide to make a day out of it. First on the plan was a stop off at the archery range but when we got there we found it full of little kids. Since this was our kid-free day we decided to pass. Next we went on to the thrift store. Hubby and I both had lists of things we were hoping to find. And of course going in with a list just about guarantees you'll leave empty handed. In our case it wasn't a complete strike out. Hubby did find one thing he was looking for and I found this lovely vintage embroidered maxi dress from Mexico.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXzu9vmuBq0Pag-f_c8IiG695FXC16_J3h8YWPOhQrqdRni3vrxzHJHAg5Q_8utrS4yfU5uPuVZld7AB2eYL2JCJB2SUDzM5t5WrweaWHLykFzl20G3anG-4PHHGHsCialapcEKsJZwv1P/s640/blogger-image--1384193837.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXzu9vmuBq0Pag-f_c8IiG695FXC16_J3h8YWPOhQrqdRni3vrxzHJHAg5Q_8utrS4yfU5uPuVZld7AB2eYL2JCJB2SUDzM5t5WrweaWHLykFzl20G3anG-4PHHGHsCialapcEKsJZwv1P/s1600/blogger-image--1384193837.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
But this one is for <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/211586547/vintage-embroidered-slim-maxi-peasant?ref=shop_home_active_2" target="_blank">etsy</a> and I had actually been looking for things for myself. Oh well. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
A couple of more stops to get a new pair of gloves for Hubby and to warm up with a coffee and then it was time to collect Sprog. </div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Once at home, I realized that I was starting to feel sick. That nixed our plans to go out for Korean BBQ, one of our favorite family meals out. Instead Hubby very kindly picked up Chinese take-out. Hot and sour soup is hands down the best thing for a cold. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I woke up Sunday morning with a full blown head cold and spent the day on the couch watching tv, blowing my nose, and generally feeling pathetic. So much for anything I had planned to get done. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Thankfully it seems to have been a fairly whimpy cold and I woke up feeling much better today. But apparently things are still just a bit off. I tried to take pictures on the deck but between the wind and the weird light angles I didn't get anything useable. So I moved inside where at leat there wasn't any wind. The light is still completely off and this time the camera was crooked. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
And my hair is flat and I think the underneath dress is actually too short to look right. Oh well, I'm wearing my it's-exactly-the-right-color-and-so-wonderfully-soft-and-warm pashmina so life is still ok. </div>

Up until just the last year or two I never used to feel the cold. I'm guessing it is one of those things that goes with being a woman of a certain age (bah!) Though to be fair I'm actually finding the experience of being cold a novelty and one that I'm embracing fully. I am taking full advantage of the phenomenon to pile on sweaters and purchase warm striped socks to wear under skirts. While this look may not be the most flattering to my figure, it's very good for my soul. Definitely an outfit that makes me feel like me and one I'll happily be seen in over at <a href="http://notdeadyetstyle.blogspot.com/2014/11/visible-monday-142-all-favorite-colors.html" target="_blank">Patti's Visible Monday! </a><br>

This is the sweater I didn't knit but wish I had. It's a big fluffy hug! (Corduroy skirt, wine colored shirt, sweater, hat, and shoes are all thrifted.) The oversized silhouette makes me feel a little like a cartoon character so I'm linking up with <a href="http://spygirl-amb.blogspot.com/2014/11/52-pick-me-up-cartoon.html" target="_blank">Anne's 52 Pick-me-up</a>. <br>

My mother-in-law gave me this lovely cameo from her mother's jewelry collection. I suspect it goes back several generations further than that.<br>

I've been avoiding the thrift stores the last couple of weeks in an attempt to get the backlog of inventory listed before buying more. Shopping is so much more fun than sitting at my computer. But yesterday I had the itch so I decided to go to one store and figured I'd only really look at things for myself. I've been on the hunt for long sleeve shirts and dresses for winter. Did I ever get all that wrong! I came home with nothing for myself but what a haul for the shop! </div>

<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgBK_KwTdn-QuLxCN9L8ruGilyE7sv4CZdPWItC2swmLfN89DLr6wzUB7NC8VPZRl1Jj1RDyC414b_Hq5BzZDXILfwYfXLshEG1-5EhsIDj4NEnTboDwK80RDB0bIqjmHE5JqpctR0brNw/s1600/outfit+2.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgBK_KwTdn-QuLxCN9L8ruGilyE7sv4CZdPWItC2swmLfN89DLr6wzUB7NC8VPZRl1Jj1RDyC414b_Hq5BzZDXILfwYfXLshEG1-5EhsIDj4NEnTboDwK80RDB0bIqjmHE5JqpctR0brNw/s1600/outfit+2.JPG" height="640" width="268" /></a><br />
<br />
When I was a kid I hated dressing in layers. But I think that's because my mom's version of "dressing in layers" translated to "way too many clothes" on me. By the time I had the coat on top of the long sleeve sweater, which was on top of the long sleeve shirt, I far too warm and thoroughly incapacitated, like a pipsqueak version of the Michelin tire man. And when I got too hot, which I always did, and started stripping off layers, I'd have all this extra clothing to carry around and keep track of. Nope! As soon as I had autonomy over my own outfits I was all about one thickness of clothing with a coat over top if absolutely necessary. <br />
<br />
And then I discovered the short over long version of layering. Suddenly, with the addition of a long sleeve T my summer shirts and dresses became my winter shirts and dresses!<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiY_ktLZPG5BAcKGT9DjQ5V1CSNvJjEuTSv8gN2dXi-DpWdBiDQjKV-EvRj0uP5pZnkMq5hVhElNRkbls94_yiRcsoutbGzrFZ_IPO3YQcAR8dJWlqtgzy2yU6UVhCUrNgDynprTwznheTj/s1600/outfit+1.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiY_ktLZPG5BAcKGT9DjQ5V1CSNvJjEuTSv8gN2dXi-DpWdBiDQjKV-EvRj0uP5pZnkMq5hVhElNRkbls94_yiRcsoutbGzrFZ_IPO3YQcAR8dJWlqtgzy2yU6UVhCUrNgDynprTwznheTj/s1600/outfit+1.JPG" height="640" width="282" /></a><br />

With this outfit I took it one step further adding a sleeveless sweater to the pile and giving the whole outfit a bit of everyday steampunk that I love.<br />

I got these fantastic, apparently new Clarks boots at Goodwill last year. They are by far one of my favorite/best finds.<br />
<br />
In other news, I had a meeting with my publisher and got the go ahead for a new book of knitting patterns. I can't really tell you anything about it at this point other than it will include a range of projects from sweaters to scarves and hats, and maybe even an afghan, and it will be so much fun! It also means I now have a LOT of work to do. I'll post little sneak peeks as I can.<br />
